The toughest time in Mumbai is during the monsoon. Period. Potholes, puddles, heavy downpours, waterlogged roads, and the daily struggle of catching a Mumbai local while dodging the incessant rain—living in the city is not easy, and monsoon season makes it all the more challenging.
While we all have the basic essentials like raincoats and umbrellas ready, there are a few other things that can make navigating Mumbai's monsoons a little easier. Here’s your essential monsoon survival kit.
Ditch Your Regular Footwear

Your favourite everyday footwear may not be the best choice during the monsoon. Getting caught in the rain can leave your shoes soaked for hours, and they often take forever to dry, leading to unpleasant smells and permanent damage.
Instead, switch to sliders, Crocs, or other waterproof footwear. They are comfortable, easy to clean and dry quickly. Plus, with so many styles available today, you can find options that work perfectly well for the office too.
And if you prefer wearing flats or formal shoes at work, keep a spare pair at your office. You can commute in your monsoon-friendly footwear and change once you arrive.
Swap Your Handbag for a Backpack

A stylish handbag may not be the most practical choice when you're battling Mumbai's rain. If you carry a laptop to work, a backpack with a waterproof cover is a much better option.
It keeps your hands free while travelling and, more importantly, gives your laptop and other essentials an extra layer of protection from unexpected showers.
Always Carry a Small Towel

Wet hair is almost unavoidable during Mumbai's monsoon. Whether your umbrella turns inside out or you get caught in a sudden downpour, a small hand towel can be a lifesaver.
Keep one in your bag to quickly dry your hair, face or hands before heading into the office.
Keep a Change of Clothes at Work

There’s nothing worse than spending an entire workday sitting in wet jeans while the office air conditioning is blasting.
Keep an emergency outfit at your workplace. A lightweight dress is a great option—it takes up very little space and can be a comfortable alternative if your clothes get soaked during your commute.
Antiseptic Wet Wipes Are a Must

Walking through Mumbai's waterlogged streets can get messy. Your feet and legs can come into contact with muddy, dirty rainwater, so keeping a pack of antiseptic wet wipes in your bag is always a good idea.
They are also handy for cleaning your feet and hands when you don't have immediate access to a washroom.
Keep Hair Accessories Handy

Mumbai's humidity and rain can make hair difficult to manage. Keep a few hair claw clips and scrunchies in your bag so you can quickly tie your hair up when needed.
They take up almost no space and can be especially useful when you're trying to keep wet or frizzy hair away from your face.
Your Mumbai Monsoon Survival Kit
So, before you step out into the Mumbai rain, make sure your bag has your umbrella, waterproof footwear, hand towel, antiseptic wet wipes, hair accessories and an emergency change of clothes. And if you're heading to work, don't forget to keep a spare pair of office-friendly shoes at your desk.
You can't stop the rain, avoid every pothole or control Mumbai's notorious waterlogging—but with the right essentials, you can at least make monsoon season a little less chaotic.
